Dr. Richard Henry Lee Jones (1923-2013) was an African American music professor, veteran of the United States Navy B-1 Band, musician, and band leader. Jones was born Dec. 9, 1923, in Summerfield, N.C. to Addie Ogburn Jones and William Jones. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy B-1 Band. Huey “Pip-Konee” L. Lawrence was a Navy veteran, musician, and educator. Lawrence was born February 27, 1922 in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1942, Lawrence joined the United States Navy B-1 Band. Wray Raphael Herring (1926-2010) was born in Parkersburg, Sampson County, North Carolina on January 31, 1926. Herring moved to Greensboro, N.C. and joined the United States Navy during World War II.
